What is the SAT & ACT?
The SAT and ACT are both tests used for admissions to the undergraduate programs in USA and also some other countries. The exams are an important step towards your application.
The SAT (conducted by the College Board) is an offline (pen and paper) test while the ACT (conducted by American College Testing Inc.) is an online (computer based) test. However, the SAT is planning to go online as well and would change the test format – the earliest this would happen is 2023 or later. Both tests are offered multiple times in a year. Test takers have to write the test at a predefined center location.

- Overall format
- The test is shorter
- The test is adaptive – this implies that the questions in the second module of each section will depend on the performance of the student in the first module of that section
- Unscored questions (2 in each module) will be present to help in the scoring process

The structure of the Digital SAT is shown below:
Reading & Writing:
Format: Adaptive test design, administered via two separate modules
Number of questions: 54 questions (27 questions in each module)
Duration: 64 minutes (32 minutes for each module)
Type of questions: MCQ with 4 options
Scores reported: 2 Section scores (out of 800 each) and Total score (out of 1600)
Mathematics
Format: Adaptive test design, administered via two separate modules (both with calculator)
Number of questions: 44 questions (22 questions in each module)
Duration: 70 minutes (35 minutes for each module)
Type of questions: MCQ with 4 options – 75% Grid-in-25%
Scores reported: 2 Section scores (out of 800 each) and Total score (out of 1600)
The Digital SAT format
- Reading and Writing:
- One single Reading and Writing section with 2 modules & questions from both areas in each module
- Format: Adaptive test design, administered via two separate modules
Number of questions: 54 questions (27 questions in each module)

- There would be many short passages instead of long passages
- One single question associated with each passage
- Mathematics
- One single Math section with 2 modules
- Format: Adaptive test design, administered via two separate modules (both with calculator)
Number of questions: 44 questions (22 questions in each module)
Duration: 70 minutes (35 minutes for each module)
Type of questions: MCQ with 4 options – 75% & Grid-in-25%
- Word problems will be shorter
- In-built graphing calculator and personal calculators available for all questions
